This beautiful coastal path was one of our lockdown finds, I guess just over a year ago now. We must have walked it at least four or five times since then, most recently a few weeks ago, on a weekday afternoon of surprisingly fair weather. I imagine that at the weekends it could get more busy, but we’ve always found it surprisingly quiet, and we barely passed anyone on this occasion.

The path winds for 8km (in one direction) around the Wattle Downs peninsula, overlooking the very tidal Manukau harbour, flanked by an eclectic architectural collection of houses with enticing back gardens. Toward the end there is a little beach and children’s playground. The first few times we had to break the walk up into smaller chunks, because Asterix’s fitness wasn’t yet good enough. But now he can walk the whole path and back again, and still have energy to play with other pups at the off-leash Kauri Point!

Bright blues and greens on the way there, soft sleepy pastels on the way back. Such a peaceful and relaxing way to spend a few evening hours.
